My beloved North Carolina has been in the news too many times these last weeks because of hurricane Florence. One article documented what people took with them when they fled their homes: pets, photo albums, letters, clothes, and jewelry. One person took their freezer.

I looked around my home deciding what to take if I had to evacuate in 5 minutes: Mother’s seminary Bible with notes filling the margins, a family history and photos, the dogs (of course), a letter. Most other things could be replaced although they’d be missed.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could pick and choose which experiences to hold dear and which ones to forget? I wish we could discard memories as easily as clothing that no longer fits, shoes that inflict blisters, or aged cologne.

If your children had to choose which memories to keep, which ones would they select?
